Dear Customers,
In 1908, Nine years before my own mother’s birthday in 1917, American activist, Ann Reeves Jarvis of Philadelphia laid the foundation for what has become known as the first Mother’s Day. Thanks to her efforts which included a massive letter writing campaign to politicians and business leaders, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day in 1914.
Mother’s Day is celebrated this coming Sunday, May 11th and the day remains one of the busiest restaurant days of the year, not to mention a real boon to the greeting card and floral industries. In doing our part, my wife has ordered a record number of Mother’s Day bouquets and potted plants for those of you just too busy or forgetful!
Among the selections are Butterfly Rose Globes, assorted floral bouquets of all configurations, Fleurette Mums, Mandevilla plants, Boston Ferns, Begonias with Ivy, Lavender plants, tulips, mini roses, large roses and vases to hold them in, and new to us this year, patio tomato plants and Sweet Basil to help you get your garden started.
As I mentioned before, taking Mom out to dinner is also a popular way to express your appreciation to the woman who bore you, loves you, raised you and continues to lavish affection on you even after you no longer deserve it! Restaurants will no doubt be booked weeks in advance so why not bring all the family together for a big meal? One that Mom doesn’t have to have anything to do with but enjoy?
Make her favorite meal, do all the preparation and all the clean-up while Mom takes an uncharacteristic day off! We have a bounty of tremendous meal ideas in our meat case, every day. Does she like steak? A pot roast? Ham and mashed potatoes? Or perhaps a perfectly browned turkey breast? She will appreciate anything you make for her – the gift is in the giving – and not requiring her to help. Moms are like that!
