Dear Customers,
Nothing throws a bucket of ice water on a kid’s summer vacation more than the dreaded phrase, “back-to-school”! This Thursday, after more than 50+ days of unadulterated bliss, the area’s students will drag themselves out of bed long before they want to and head back to the “halls of higher learning”.
Not everyone will be sad, however. Most parents will be silently celebrating the event – some, not so silently. I still have a video of my wife, the year she took a sabbatical, sending the kids off to school – and then doing her ‘happy dance’ in the driveway!
Also beginning (seemingly earlier every year), the football team makes the trip to Kane to take on the Wolves on Friday night, the 22nd! On the same evening, the co-op soccer team takes on the Tigers in Galeton at a two-day tournament. The cross-county squad begins on Saturday, the 30th, and the volleyball team travels to Coudersport, Thursday the 28th. While the golf teams started earlier this month on Monday the 11th with a multiple squad match.
Just a little advance notice. Next week we will be receiving our annual shipment of Hardy Mums. Practically every greenhouse, shopping mall or garden center will have a mum display at this time of year. Ours, however, will be a exceptional value at $6.49 for an 8” pot! Available in a multitude of colors, these mums will add beauty to any flower garden or floral display.
Hardy Mums, also known as “garden mums,” are perennials that bloom in the fall rather than the spring. They are considered “winter hardy” in zones 4 thru 9 (we’re in zone 5 so we’re o.k.). Hardy mums thrive under full sunlight in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and should return every year once their roots are well established.
Make sure to come early so that your favorite colors are not all picked over. Last year, they lost our initial order and by the time it was discovered all we could get was a preponderance of “yellow”. While still beautiful, “variety is the spice of life!”
