Dear Customers,
Woodchucks and possums and critters “Oh My!” Let’s be honest with each other. There’s so little going on at this time of the year that we have to feign interest in what a groundhog thinks of all things! And not just any groundhog, a tame groundhog, living in a heated burrow with plenty to eat and no predators to speak of other than gluttony and obesity.
I applaud Punxsutawney, though, for their ingenuity in creating a celebration with all its inherent income streams – out of a rodent. I know people who actually eat woodchuck stew. Perhaps, if we all did, it’d put a dent in their population, and they’d have to spend more time running for their lives than predicting the weather.
At this time of year, the seemingly interminable cold, gray skies, iciness and regular snowfalls have combined to render many of us “fed up with winter”. It’s quite easy, particularly during the months of January, February, and March to get a little blue.
Some of the best things you can do, particularly at this time of year, are to eat right, exercise regularly and get plenty of sleep. I have no trouble with the last one – it’s the first two that I struggle with. Long gone are the days of stockpiling food in the “root cellar”, canning, salting and curing meats and just making do without fresh fruits and vegetables.
Thanks to shippers and truckers, we can provide a beautiful and healthy assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables pretty much year-round. If you’re like me, it’s easy to take it for granted, but produce departments make it easy to eat healthier. Sure we still like our fresh meats, but Mother Nature invented side dishes for a reason! Not only do they taste great, but they provide essential nutrients that we just can’t live (well) without.
