WEEK #35 AUGUST 25th – 31st

Dear Customers,

Any astronomist worth his salt would debate me vigorously over the point, but in the real world, summer ends this weekend, some 3 full weeks before the calendar and science claim it does!

Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer in so many ways.  The kids are back to school which precludes many families from any more travel.  Fall sports have begun in just about every sport other professional football and even they aren’t far behind, beginning on Thursday, September 4th!  By the actual first day of Autumn, the NFL will be in their third week!

But the main focus this week is the Labor Day weekend!  Just as Memorial Day kicks off the summer season (even though it’s three weeks early), Labor Day is the de facto end summer.  You may have even heard the old fashion rule that, “you never should wear white after Labor Day!”  Speaking personally, I never followed fashion rules or trends as you can tell by just looking at me.

Labor Day was begun in 1894 by President Grover Cleveland who hoped to create a holiday that honored and respected the nation’s workers.  Typical laborers at that time often worked seven days a week and 12 hours a day just to make ends meet.  The term “laborers” often included children as young as 5 years old, unsafe workplaces, low wages and unusually cruel managers and overseers.

The creation of a holiday to honor the country’s workers was right, just, and long overdue.  The federal government and most companies will get the first Monday of September off, but Costa’s Supermarket will not!  We’ve discovered over the last 75 years or so of doing business in Smethport that people seem to get even hungrier when they don’t have to go to work.  Our normal hours will be in effect – 7am through 9pm for your shopping convenience and needs.
