Dear Customers,
I come from a big family by today’s standards. As the fifth of five children I grew accustomed at an early age to being referred to as “the baby” of the family. My oldest sister was already in college when I was born! She just turned 90 last month.
My mom was the “matriarch” of our family. And as such, everybody deferred to her, consulted her for her opinion, and made it a point to come home for major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our house was often jam-packed full on these occasions, and I loved the clamor – the noise – the colors – and of course the food!
Then one year, my older sisters, possibly under spousal pressure, decided to stay home for the holidays and it was never the same again. Since company wasn’t coming home, there was no need to go “all out” preparing all the traditional dishes and desserts that I’d come to anticipate! What a huge letdown!
Perhaps that’s why, even today, I thoroughly enjoy hosting large family gatherings, particularly during the holidays. But the more things change, the more they stay the same. I have five kids, but it is a rare event indeed when they all gather in the same place at the same time. Individual schedules, work commitments and long distances conspire to make that, if not an impossibility – at least an improbability.
Which is what makes those occasions when everything aligns and we all gather under one roof – all the more special!
