There are certain “grocery-store-associated” products that become extremely popular during the month of December. Even people who are not normally given to generosity often find themselves breaking away from their usual to discover charity in their hearts.
Two such products that lend themselves to the spirit of giving are party platters and fruit baskets. There used to be a small store in Clarendon, PA just south of Warren that sold more fruit baskets at Christmas time than practically anyone else. They would set up a production line and literally roll out hundreds of baskets every year. They were so successful that our former supplier, Olean Wholesale, would hire them to set up a presentation for all the member stores to show us how we could expand our fruit basket business.
Fruit basket is actually a misnomer. You can pretty much put anything in them that a customer would want in addition to fruit – such as candy, nuts, coffee, tea, meats, & cheeses. Years ago, we actually had someone who requested an assortment of 8oz canned Shurfine vegetables for a little old man who preferred the smaller sizes. You’re pretty much only limited by your imagination and budget.
At this time of year, you’ll often find yourself needing to feed an entire group or being asked to bring a dish to pass for a party or function. It’s not really a big “ask” to bring something. The problem is finding the time to prepare it. One call to Costa’s Deli at 814-887-9371 and you can order from 20 prepared party platters often in two sizes depending upon the size of your gang.
