Dear Customers,
By this point in 2026, New Year’s resolutions have begun to take on a bit of tarnish! Of course, we all have qualities that get called into question by friends and family – even by ourselves. That is why so many people resolve to “lose weight”, “eat healthier”, “work out more”, etc. when January rolls around.
Perhaps it’s in response to the over-indulgence of Thanksgiving and Christmas, maybe it’s just a determination to improve oneself in the new year – sort of “fresh slate” approach, but suddenly many of us open a gym membership, buy some exercise equipment or even more radically, determine to “cut out carbs!”
As someone who has resolved, many times, to lose weight I can tell you that it’s not easy – often bordering upon the impossible. Then try working in a location that has a donut case as well as a deli and it becomes even more daunting.
That being said, more in the vein of “do as I say, not as I do”, eating healthier is even more important at this time of year. Physical activity is often curtailed when it’s cold and icy outside plus fewer hours of sunshine can lead to physical ailments that are very real and debilitating.
Fortunately, in this age we live in, fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available at any time of the year. Our ancestors had to can, salt, dry and otherwise preserve their harvest in the hope that it would last throughout the winter months. The incidence of scurvy in the United States, caused by a shortage of Vitamin C has tripled in children over the last several years! There doesn’t seem to be any good reason for it in this country, particularly when it’s so easy to grab an orange, drink a glass of juice or even take a vitamin supplement. Wasn’t that why Flintstone chewables were invented?
I resolve to try harder to eat better (with my wife’s help) – please resolve to do the same!
