WEEK #6 FEBRUARY 5th, 2024

Dear Customers,

I remember lying on the floor in front of our family’s first color television on Sunday afternoon, January 15th, 1967, waiting for the start of the AFL-NFL World Championship football game.  As a seventh grader, I wasn’t particularly engrossed in what became known later as the first Super Bowl, but I tuned in most likely to witness the culmination of more hype than had ever been associated with a single football game.  The upstart Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL were taking on the mighty NFL and its champions, the Green Bay Packers.

In those days, there were two football leagues: the American and the National.  Few people gave the Chiefs much chance of defeating the mighty Packers and the final score really was a surprise to no one.  (Packers 35 – Chiefs 10!)  The halftime show featured performances by the University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band, the Grambling State University Marching Band, Al Hirt—an American trumpeter and bandleader—and the Anaheim High School Drill Team & Flag Girls.

Things have escalated a bit since then!  The Super Bowl now consists of the NFL division winners from the AFC and the NFC.  Halftime shows feature mega superstar entertainers, elaborate stages and sets as well as “Super” commercials costing the advertiser $7 million for a 30 second spot!

Each chicken wing you devour will be but a tiny drop in the bucket of the 1.42 million expected to be consumer on Feb 11th, 2024.  12.5 million pizzas will also be downed along with 325½ million gallons of beer!  There will be over 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips which rank far behind potato chips at 11.2 million.  Add in the nearly 14 billion burgers and other sundry delicacies, and it’s no wonder that Super Bowl Sunday is the 2nd largest food consumption day in the United States behind only Thanksgiving!

Costa’s Deli will be well stocked with wings, pizzas, subs, chicken, salads and desserts.  The Deli department is conveniently located right next to the beer and wine displays and only a short walk from the meat cases and the pop aisle.  Use our direct Deli Phone Line at 814-887-9371 to place your orders early because we plan on being busy!
