Dear Customers,
In the grocery business certain foods are associated with seasons, holidays or celebrations throughout the year. For instance, ham or lamb is popular at Easter while American cuisine is ever present at the patriotic holidays; Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day. Obviously, turkeys are for Thanksgiving and often ham or beef is served at Christmas.
June is usually when local strawberries ripen and people hurry to buy a flat or two to can or make freezer jam! Late July and early August is when local sweet corn becomes available and you know you’re going to overeat it because it’s only available for a few short weeks!
October is known nationwide in the grocery industry as Apple month. In fact, only the banana outsells the apple as America’s most popular fruit with 58% of customers admitting to purchasing apples regularly. Is it any mystery? You can eat them raw or cooked. In salads, desserts or even entrees. You can eat them with a bright red candy coating or smothered in sauces. They are really much more adaptable than some old South American banana! Apples are so popular I had to look up the definition of the word, “ubiquitous” just to use it to describe them!
In fact, if you go to our web page; www.costassupermarket.com and click on recipes you’re presented with a search bar. Simply typing in the word, “apples”, results in hundreds of recipes – and that’s just our one web site! Over the next few days, you will be seeing our produce department abound with orchard bins of apples in all your favorite varieties.
Orchard bins are just what the name indicates. They used to be wooden bins filled directly at the orchard with the freshest and sweetest fruits. The only difference now is that most of the time, the bins are constructed of heavy cardboard, but the contents are every bit as delicious and fresh.
So, dust off that favorite apple recipe handed down through generations and get that kitchen smelling like heaven! Here’s a simple recipe that will accomplish that very thing:
SOUTHERN FRIED APPLES
| ½ CUP BUTTER | ½ CUP GRANULATED SUGAR |
| 2 TBS GROUND CINNAMON (or to taste) | 4 Granny Smith apples- peeled, cored & sliced |
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the cinnamon and the sugar, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add the apple slices and cook until softened, 5 – 8 minutes. These are delicious with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!
