Dear Customers,
Way back when I was a student at Smethport Area Jr.-Sr. High School, commencement was a solemn event. Fifty some years ago, while many students opted to continue their education in college, just as many – if not more – opted for the trades or a full-time job.
That’s why so much importance was placed on the actual procession down the aisle, the stately stroll across the stage and the handshake and acceptance of the diploma. For a large percentage of students, that would be the one and only time they would take part in such a ceremony.
The master of ceremonies would always ask that the applause be held until all the students had been announced. That would really speed things up as in those days we usually had between 100-125 students in a class.
Then somewhere along the line, about when my three youngest children went through the ceremony, it became common practice for the audience to ignore the “no applause till the end” rule and instead scream out the celebratory “WHOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO!” after their child’s introduction. Once the first “whooooo” hit the rafters, it immediately became a contest of one-upmanship as each successive family tried to out “hoooooo” the previous one!
I guess you can’t blame them for their exuberance. Some of those graduates may have been long-shots at best and the screams of joy were as much relief as anything! If, as parents, you really want to show your pride and enthusiasm, how about a custom designed and baked graduation cake from Costa’s Bakery?
