This week marks the 33rd week of 2026. That only leaves us 19 weeks remaining till New Year’s or about 1/3 of the year to go. The older I get, the faster times flies by. I guess it’s true what they say, “when you get over the hill – you pick up speed!”
In year’s past, this has been the week when school age kids and teachers go back to school. This year it’s a week later with dismissal in the Spring being moved back to June 3rd. While that information is apropos of nothing, it illustrates how quickly time passes. For instance, it seems like only moments ago we lined up along Mechanic Street to watch the Memorial Day parade. This week, the McKean County Fair is in town! Where did the summer get to?
Everyone from the ages of 6 to 60 has a memory of the Fair from when they were younger. Maybe even more than one. You go from being completely excited about the lights, the colors, the rides and the games . . . to being more excited about the Fair Food! It’s not that you can’t get a Sno-Cone or a candy apple elsewhere throughout the year, it’s just that the smells of hot grease mingled with sawdust and sugar-coated treats is indigenous to the County Fair!
Speaking of excellent food! Costa’s Supermarket has enjoyed a relationship with the Smethport Sports Boosters for over 30 years! We support them and they, in turn, support their local businesses! They feature our famous Italian Sausage in their sandwiches, and I can remember the time when Fair Week was the one time of year you could find a good sausage sandwich on the menu – anywhere! You could always fry up some links at home, but there’s just something about the carnival atmosphere that really sets off the taste.
Sure, there are other booths and vendors that feature similar products, but these are sold by outfits that travel around the country all summer from county fair to county fair and when they leave – the profit goes with them – in their pockets. The Smethport Sports Boosters are sometimes the sole supporter of Smethport Athletics and every penny they earn goes to ensure that our athletes have the proper tools to succeed. And it’s all done with volunteer labor – nobody is getting paid to be there! That’s what makes small towns great! So, stop by and visit the Orange & Black – Smethport Sports Boosters trailer!
